The Low Store building was built as a gas station in 1925 by Mrs. Agnes Ka'aukai Low. Mrs. Low was a native Hawaiian entrepreneur who built a gas station as well as several surrounding houses she rented to local school teachers. Over the years Low Store has transformed from a gas station to an automachanics shop, an arcade, and eventually the store it is today.
Low Store is now a general store, restaurant, and fruit stand operated by the 3rd and 4th generations of the Low family. We offer a wide selection of groceries, produce, and beer to save you a trip into town, as well as a delicious food and drink menu! We are currently open Monday through Friday from 10am to 2pm. Find us along the historic 4 mile Old Mamalahoa Highway, just 10 miles outside of hilo, 1.5 miles from the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden and 7 miles from Akaka Falls.
